Throughout his life, Dag Hammarskjöld loved to read. As a child, his father, Hjalmar, allowed Dag to access the well-stocked library at Uppsala Castle, and he took full advantage. Of all the buildings that could be dedicated to Dag, a library seems the most appropriate.
Here are three reasons why the Dag Hammarskjöld Library is a perfect tribute:
1. It Was Born with the United Nations
From the very beginning of the UN in 1945, leaders knew they needed a library to serve delegates and staff. When the General Assembly formally recognized it in 1946, they called it a “vital tool” — a place where diplomacy and knowledge would intersect. In many ways, the Library has grown alongside the UN itself, becoming an indispensable resource for peace and decision-making. In so many ways, Dag defined what it meant to be a UN Secretary-General. He devoted his life to his work and to the belief that disarmament, peace, and freedom from fear weren’t pie-in-the-sky, pointless dreams. It’s fitting for the organization to recognize his contributions.
2. It Honors Hammarskjöld’s Love of Knowledge
In 1961, shortly after Dag Hammarskjöld’s untimely death, the newly built Library in New York was named in his honor. The choice was deeply symbolic. Hammarskjöld was not only a Secretary-General but also a writer, thinker, and translator who believed knowledge was not meant to be locked away. For him, books were instruments of service, meant to illuminate choices and inspire responsibility. A library carrying his name reflects this perfectly.
Dag was also a member of the prestigious Swedish Academy, reviewing literature for the Nobel Prize award. Again, what better place to bear his name than a library, a repository of knowledge?
3. It Remains a Living Legacy
Unlike a monument of stone, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library is alive. It continues to provide fast, reliable information to UN delegates and Secretariat staff, fueling the very work of diplomacy he cared about most. Every time someone consults its resources, Hammarskjöld’s legacy is in action: knowledge being shared to support peace, not hoarded for power.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Library is more than shelves and books. It’s a reminder that real leadership is rooted in ideas, reflection, and service. By naming the UN’s library after him, the world chose a tribute that mirrors Hammarskjöld’s deepest conviction: that knowledge should be shared in the service of humanity.
